The renaturation of the Niers in Mönchengladbach-Wanlo is the second measure on the upper course to be implemented according to the specifications of the water meadows concept. The 1.6 km long section begins south of the A 46 in the Wanlo district and ends at the edge of Wickrathberg. Due to the influence of the nearby Garzweiler open-cast lignite mine, the Niers no longer has a groundwater connection and is fed by an artificial supply line from the open-cast mine.

As the Nier Valley was an important settlement area from the Stone Age onwards, the work is being supervised by an archaeologist in sections where early historical finds are possible. Further requirements for the construction supervision resulted from the location in the nature reserve Finkenberger Bruch. In order to avoid water losses, the development takes place close to the surface in loamy soil layers.

After only 3 months of construction, the watercourse was completed at the beginning of June 2008.

The now meandering watercourse is left to its own devices due to the wide floodplain that is available as a development area. Woody plantings were only carried out selectively as initial measures. For structural enrichment, deadwood was installed locally.

The nature reserve Finkenberger Bruch is enhanced by a new, near-natural habitat.
