The design uses landscape architectural means to recreate the historical spatial edges in the transition from Markt to Tuchmarkt. Markt and Tuchmarkt can once again be experienced as clear and independent urban spaces with their own identities. The historic, listed town hall dominates the market as the most important and imposing building in the town of Zeulenroda.

Another measure is the reduction of all visible traffic elements through the uniform design of the paved surface with typical local natural stone structures. This urban texture, assigned to the pedestrian, gives the square a clear statement. As the focal point of the city and part of the pedestrian zone, it once again becomes a place of communication and commerce. The fountain "Der Karpfenpfeifer", designed by an artist, will be restored and re-located on the square surface.

In the heart of the city of Zeulenroda in the Thuringian Vogtland is the market place with the classicist town hall (19th century). The historic market place in front of the town hall was rebuilt in the 60's according to functional needs (traffic and parking) in the city center. The nearby Tuchmarkt was degraded by the large intersection at the Aumaischenstrasse to a residual area.
Before this background, a competition was announced, whose task was to redesign the square so that it is available again as a central place for the citizens and leaves a representative impression.

History
In old maps and photos, it can be seen that the market place in geometric form was assigned to the city hall. The cloth market was spatially separated from the market by the former development to the west of the town hall. There were two squares with independent identities, which were merged into one disproportionate large space due to the loss of the historic spatial edges.

Concept
The landscape architectural concept repairs the missing spatial edge between the two squares by placing a block of trees in the alignment of the town hall. This restores the lost proportions and makes the independence of the two squares readable. In addition, the volume of traffic in the vicinity of the town hall is reduced to a minimum, so that the quality of stay of the square is in the foreground.

Design
The market square is highlighted by a dark basalt carpet and light steles as a stage for communication and action of the citizens. The perimeter areas of the market, the areas under the tree block, and the Cloth Market area are designed in limestone median pavers that harmonize with the adjacent facades through their warm earth tones. The steep gradient on the square will be absorbed by a stepped angle on Goethestraße. The existing carp whistler sculpture was supplemented by the "carp cabaret". As a water feature with carp figures, it is a popular play area for children, who like to watch it from the gastronomically used edges of the square.
To strengthen the quality of stay of the new square, benches and large pots with flowering plants were located at the historic facades. Today, the citizens of the city sit here and are proud of the new centre of their city centre.
The tree block at the Tuchmarkt is made of branched sycamore trees. In addition to the spatial effect, it offers a valuable area with play and recreational quality under its canopy of leaves.
