When they bought the house, the owners found the small courtyard garden surrounded by various buildings and walls to be a desolate lawn with a few senescent shrubs and a pond bowl.
They wanted a garden space that would serve as both a kitchen garden and have an ornamental character. For cost reasons, they decided that the existing patio area and a garage would be retained for the time being and would not be remodeled until a second phase of construction.
The garden area was laid out in the style of a cottage garden after the existing shrubs were cleared and the lawn peeled away. The beds were divided into square or rectangular shapes and edged with boxwood. They are planted with a wide variety of vegetables throughout the year. In the shaded area there are ornamental shrubs accompanied by specimen and ground cover perennials.
Two trellises set in front of the heterogeneous wall surfaces are planted with rambler roses 'Snow Goose' or the existing wild vine and a climbing hydrangea. A bench was placed in front of the rose trellis.
