The area completes a "green" axis in Hanover, which already runs from the Leine via the Hermann-Löns-Park, the Tiergarten, the Breite Wiese and on to the Misburger Wald.

The project goals are:
- Preservation of the high nature conservation value (among other things, 45 vascular plants of RL proven) of the pit.
In the amphibians, the great crested newt, in the birds, water and reed dwellers are of particular importance.
- Restoration of the original, nutrient-poor and lime-rich as well as saline and largely wood-free site conditions on the pit floor.
- Making the pit edges and floor accessible to experience by erecting a viewing pulpit welded together from two containers with a view into the pit.
- Renewal of the existing paths at the pit edge with several steel staircases and renewal of the canal bridge for the access road.

Until the 1960s, marl was mined.

For about 45 years, the pit was largely left to itself, partly filled with sediments, construction waste, partly wooded.

The edge of the pit is freely accessible, the pit bottom can be entered in connection with offered guided tours of the team environment and urban greenery of the state capital Hannover.
