The renaturation projects of various Weser bank areas in Bremen-Hemelingen (Middle Weser/right Weser bank, 2010 - 2012) and in Bremen-Rablinghausen (Lower Weser/left Weser bank, 2008 - 2009) were planned and structurally implemented by planungsgruppe grün gmbh on behalf of the Bremen dyke associations as part of the "Weser Lifeline" funding project.
With the bank renaturation measures of the Weser banks, the experienceability and attractiveness of the Bremen river landscape and tide-influenced waters were improved and the negative bank structures (strong canalisation and continuous steep bank reinforcement) were eliminated.
In the context of the programme "Lifeline Weser" launched by the State of Bremen, the renaturation projects were financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), among others, as an early measure for the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive.

The aim of the projects was to restore the formerly near-natural conditions of the water exchange zone as a pioneer stage in various sections of the banks of the "Weser lifeline " in the area of the municipality of Bremen and to develop habitats for the typical flora and fauna there as well as to improve the experienceability and attractiveness of the river landscape (nature observation and access to the watercourse).
The measures included removing the existing, paved bank structures (stone fill) above the mean low tidal water line, exposing the natural sandy bottom layers and transforming them into near-natural sandy banks with a shallow water zone.
