The Maximilianpark Hamm was created in 1984 from the first state garden show in NRW. The landscape architects Rainer Martin and Wedig Pridik laid the foundation for the creation of an attractive park to this day on the site of the former Maximilian colliery, which had been left to run wild for decades.

The leitmotif as a design basis from 1984 "to juxtapose the artificially created with the naturally created" can still be found on the site, which covers a total of 22 hectares. Most of the horticulturally designed areas have their counterpart in extensive areas. The display areas with roses, perennials and woody plants are juxtaposed with wild meadows and wooded areas.
An arc of tension is also found between architecture and landscape. The greened eco-house is juxtaposed with the part of the former coal washing plant designed by the artist Dr. Horst Rellecke and alienated into an elephant. This glass elephant is not only a walk-in sculpture, but also a landmark of the city of Hamm.
The design concept of creating more strongly designed areas in the west of the park and leaving the extensive, natural areas with pioneer and floodplain forests in the east has not changed until today.

The park's many walking paths lead through various themed gardens, past changing seasonal plantings, through primeval forest areas, past a near-natural pond and marsh area to the "lakeside terraces" of Lake Maximilian with its seven fountains.

After the 1984 garden show, Maximilian Park continued with a diverse cultural and event program. Today, many art objects enrich the park, themed playgrounds have been built for children, water can be experienced in its most diverse forms and tropical butterflies fly freely in NRW's largest butterfly house.

The park's latest highlight is two perennial and grass plantings by the internationally renowned garden architect Piet Oudolf, which opened in July 2011 and invite visitors to take floral rambles through a sea of impressive plant compositions over an area of 6,000 m² all year round.

Since 2012, we are a member of the EGHN (European Garden Heritage Network).
