As part of the programme 'Stadtumbau West - Innenstadt Krefeld' (Urban Redevelopment West - Inner City Krefeld), the city of Krefeld implemented the redesign of Corneliusstraße and the adjacent schoolyard of the Josefschule in 2012.
The task was to create a lively, open and high-quality urban space.
The redesign of Corneliusstraße includes the large square area. This is also used by the children of the Josefschule at break times.
The 'multi-coding' of the new Corneliusstraße square area is an example of an intelligent and re-use-oriented redesign of open spaces in the neighbourhood.
The schoolyard of the Josefschule was redesigned at the same time and functionally linked to the square design of Corneliusstraße. The playground can also be used by the children of the neighbourhood outside school hours.
