The sports complex Robert-Koch-Straße with a size of approx. 18,550 m² is located in the south of the city of Halle. It was built at the beginning of the 1960s. The complex was extended with an eight-lane circuit, a ten-lane sprint track in the west and the throwing facilities in the area of the inner lawns. Long jump and the former pole vault facility are adjacent to the west of the running tracks. The sports facility corresponds to the competition facility type A (8 lanes, total length of the sports field 176.91m) according to DIN 18035-1 "Sports fields-Part 1: Outdoor facilities for games and athletics, planning and dimensions".

After more than 40 years of intensive use of the sports field and due to massive poplar growth, a fundamental renovation was necessary. For this reason, the office DÄRR LANDSCHAFTSARCHITETKEN was commissioned in 2009 with the planning of the open spaces of the sports facility. The renovation of the facility was started in 2010.

The eight-lane circuit and the ten-lane sprint track were made of synthetic surfacing from Polytan. Coverable water ditches integrated within the surface are used for obstacle courses.
Long jump, triple jump, high jump and pole vault facilities can be used flexibly depending on the position of the sun and wind conditions. The high jump and pole vault facilities can be dismantled. This makes it possible to store them on an adjacent area protected from the weather. The facilities for discus and javelin throwing also allow flexible use in two directions. The central lawn area is equipped with a rigol system for the drainage of the running track, which allows a throttled drainage into the public network and serves as a competition area. It has been constructed in accordance with sports turf standards and has been provided with an irrigation system.
The line of the running tracks as well as the run-up and drop lines comply with DIN 18035 and the guidelines of the German Athletics Association. It was applied with UV-resistant 2-component polyurethane paint. The measurement was carried out by a surveyor approved by the World Athletics Federation (IAAF).

The sports complex is part of the Olympic base of Saxony-Anhalt (location Halle) and is used by the federal bases and state performance centers for athletics, swimming, gymnastics and rowing. The city of Halle can point to great successes in sports education, not least because the sports schools in the sports complex on Robert-Koch-Straße have been able to promote sports talent at an early stage. The sports stadium offers optimal infrastructural conditions for this. The competition conditions meet international standards. Events such as the Central German Championships in Athletics and, for the last three years, the open Central German Championships in the all-around, in which international starters also take part, are held here. In addition, the facility is used intensively for club and popular sports.
