The departments of history and cultural studies were combined in a new building designed by architect Florian Nagler. The building connects to the existing building ensemble of Rostlaube and Silberlaube. In addition to the technically required access roads and extensive green roofs, landscaped inner courtyards with recreation areas were created. Existing terrain jumps were incorporated into the landscape architecture here. In the north-east of the ensemble, a central plaza was created that will also serve as an entrance area for future expansions of Freie Universität Berlin. A tree grid of ornamental cherry trees with spectacular flowering and autumnal aspects derives from the structuralist basic grid of the architecture of the Rost- und Silberlaube from the 1970s and 1980s. At the same time, this open space planning provides a reminiscence of the former use of this area as an orchard and thus mediates between the history of the site, the building concept of structuralism and its use as the entrance area of the FU Berlin.
