The Marx-Engels-Forum is an example of socialist square design. Various art objects are placed on a round, paved open space. The central part of the ensemble is a sculpture by the sculptor Ludwig Engelhardt, according to whose plans the entire square was also designed.
The residential and commercial buildings that once stood on the site were mostly destroyed during air raids in World War II. For the redesign of the area, the remaining buildings were demolished in the 1970s.

After the reunification, a controversial discourse has arisen around the square. The dispute is whether the forum in its current form is worth preserving or the old historic urban structure should be restored.
