New park on former cemetery

On the site of the former St. Thomas cemetery, between the Tempelhofer Feld and the busy Hermannstraße, the new 6.5 hectare Anita Berber Park has been created. It is named after the dancer Anita Berber, who was buried there in 1928.

The construction was preceded by an intensive public participation process, in which the offers and the design were developed together with the users. The new park, which was planned and financed as a compensatory measure for the construction of the urban motorway A100, increases the local recreational quality in the densely populated district of Neukölln.

Vegetation, paths and equipment

An essential goal of the redesign is the creation of species-rich meadows, taking into account the valuable woody plants. The meadows are developed by partial reseeding and differentiated mowing. In the near-natural park there are small recreation and play areas as well as a free-walking zone for dogs. Individual paths cross and open up the park. The new connection to Leinestraße is provided by two staircases and a ramp system.

History

The historical dimension of the park was also taken into account in the redesign. The listed clinker brick wall on Hermannstrasse and an avenue of plane trees date from the time when the cemetery was used. These relics are complemented by striking individual trees. The beacons from the time when Tempelhofer Feld was used as an airport, which are also listed, are a particular reminder of the Cold War period.
