Construction of the new administration building for the RAG Foundation and RAG Aktiengesellschaft on the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site in Essen

The new administration building of the RAG Foundation and RAG AG is located on the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein in Essen. Situated to the west of the iconic colliery tower and vis-a-vis the mighty former coking plant, it closes the corner of the terrain at the transition to the adjacent woodland.

The new company and foundation headquarters is characterised by special design and sustainability. The roof is greened and accessible, with just two floors, the L-shaped house nestles on the edge of the former white side of the coking plant. The façade does not follow the brick look prevalent at Zollverein, but rust-red sheet metal picks up the material and color of the meandering pipelines.

But what makes it special are the building materials used for the new RAG headquarters. "Cradle to cradle" is the name of the sustainability principle that is emblematic of the structural change at Zollverein, but also that of the RAG mining group. It means that all building materials can be reused or recycled during demolition or reconstruction.
