In terms of urban development, the city of Hamm is characterised by its historic city centre with the "Pauluskirche" (St. Paul's Church) as the central point of the city centre, and in terms of urban space by two waterways in the north. The "Datteln-Hamm Canal" and the "Lippe" form an east-west axis in the northern area of the city centre. Due to the use of the resident canoeing clubs, access to the water's edge is currently only
restricted for the public. In order to be able to use the potential of the urban location on the water, the water sports uses are to be bundled in a water sports centre and a new urban quarter is to be realised near the water. The newly developed "canal edge" is to be connected to the city centre.

The aim of our concept is to create a quality connection between the inner city core of Hamm and the water edge of the "Hamm-Datteln Canal". A continuous and uniform pavement creates a coherent image as a "canal ribbon" - from the historic city center to the new water's edge. Ground markings and inscriptions along a coloured concrete band in combination with characteristic furnishings lead to the new canal edge.
