Two variants were to be submitted for the competition. The first was to be largely based on the existing traffic routing.

The second variant could be freely designed on the basis of the traffic occupancy and forecast.

The task of traffic planning was carried out by the participating office iproplan Planungsgesellschaft mbH from Chemnitz, while the design of the station forecourt was undertaken by the office LA21 Dresden.



Status quo variant

In the status quo variant, the traffic routing remains the same in principle and the limited space beyond the existing road space has to be worked with. The boundary to the busy Großenhainer Straße is formed here by the overheight backrests of the two sculptural benches and the two trees oriented towards the side wings.

The reference to the architecture and the city of Meissen is formed by a free interpretation of the principles of 'New Objectivity', which contrasts the austerity of the cubic structure with an inviting environment with a certain lightness. This is achieved through freely swinging light lines made of LED paving stones - based on the shape of the Meissen swords -, a strictly symmetrical arrangement of horizontal and vertical elements, rounded shapes of the planting areas and the water feature and a vertical sculpture on the western forecourt.

Two pairs of columnar oaks form the gates to the two courtyards - the bicycle courtyard, which offers everything a cyclist or everyday cyclist needs to get around or park their vehicle safely, and the service courtyard at the driving school. They frame the station building and make reference to the use of plants during the construction period.

Modern LED technology is used to illuminate the square and streetscape.



Alternative variant

By eliminating the left-turn lane, the station forecourt gains significantly more space and quality for pedestrians compared to the first variant. This will create a public space with a strong identity, a high quality of stay and an impact on the surrounding urban quarter. The square in front of the station concourse is given a clear reference to the building thanks to the grid floor design. The large-format slabs with the joints and thyme cushions form a kind of projection of the central window area and the side window strips from the façade onto the square.

The central axis to the pedestrian crossing laid in this variant divides the graphic pattern into two mirrored halves. As life-giving elements in the stone square, two linear water features and two walkable, almost flush with the ground, fragrant and pink-flowering thyme squares flank the path. Walkable light strips mark the three main directions and thus support the structure of the square. Planted areas with tall grasses and trees set in relation to the buildings shield the recreation area from the street.

To the east of the canopy at the main entrance and in the same proportions as it, an area for seasonal outdoor furniture is created in front of the SAXONIA station restaurant, which extends the recreation area at the station to the east.

Additional seating for different needs will be created at four locations in this variant.

As with the status quo variant, the lighting concept envisages a combination of modern mast and bollard luminaires. In addition, the geometrically structured main façade was to be accentuated with strip lighting and the canopy was to be fitted with a semi-transparent skylight.



In addition to an evaluation of the entries and variants by an expert jury, an exhibition was organized in the station building with citizen participation by the state of Saxony, the results of which were included in the ranking.



In 2022, the project planning for the forecourt and the adjacent traffic area will start, together with the traffic planners from iproplan.
