The "Green Campus Malchow" is a community school with its main location in the Berlin district of Malchow. The Doberaner Straße branch location for the middle school involved in this project is located in Berlin Neu-Hohenschönhausen in the district of Lichtenberg.

The design of the open spaces is based on the elongated school buildings and adopts their orthogonal shapes. The required paved schoolyard areas around the buildings merge into vegetated areas at the edges.

Schoolyard areas

For the pupils of the Malchow Green Campus, a uniform and spacious movement area with various recreational, sports and activity areas was created, taking into account the existing trees. Each field is marked by its materiality and defined by its use. The different functions consist of a multi-purpose pitch for soccer and basketball, a small football pitch, a long jump facility with jumping pit, a weight training/calisthenics facility, an amphitheater, a stage and two raised beds with edging. Furthermore, spacious wooden seating decks and walkways together with table tennis tables, chess tables and colorful seating create additional activity and meeting points in the schoolyard.

Materiality

The direct access routes to the buildings have a different surface than the plaza-like fields in the school grounds, which are used more for recreation. Grey concrete rectangular paving was laid on the buildings, based on the existing paving, and beige-colored, rounded concrete infiltration paving was laid within the schoolyard fields. The sports areas made of green plastic and the weight training facility made of fall protection gravel blend in with the large exercise area. The two courtyard areas overgrown with existing trees were given a single layer of yellow paving to protect the trees. The large lawn area in the south was extended and enhanced by the creation of lawn mounds with boulders and the planting of various trees and solitary shrubs as a green retreat area.

Planting

Medium-height shrub plantings under the existing trees at the edge of the property screen the courtyard from the outside. Low shrub plantings of native flowering and insect-nourishing shrubs in front of the buildings provide a green frame for the paved areas inside. New tree plantings of native, climate-adapted species can be found within the planting areas and in the paved areas. They provide shade in the courtyard and on the southern façades of the buildings, thus improving the quality of stay and the microclimate.
