The starting signal for the project "Colourful Schoolyards" in Iserlohn was given back in 2002.
The aim was to shed light on the situation at numerous Iserlohn schools that was in need of improvement and to redesign them into schoolyards that were suitable for children and close to nature. At that time, a total of 14 schools were involved in the project. In 2008, the schoolyard programme was continued under the title "Living Schoolyards" and a further 7 schools were included.

The first step for each schoolyard was to examine the existing situation, ask for wishes and set priorities. Action plans were created, with the help of which the necessary budget could be estimated. On this basis, the municipal budget provided funds for planning and redesigning the schoolyards in subsequent years.
