The Kaisergarten was designed in a landscaped style from 1898 onwards on the occasion of the 100th birthday of Kaiser Wilhelm I to serve the hard-working population for recreation.
No other place than here in Oberhausen has a similar opportunity to make the past, present and future of the Emscher more tangible. For this reason, the Kaisergarten has become a particular focus of attention for the Emschergenossenschaft, which is also renaturalising the water system in and around the Kaisergarten as part of the Emscher Reconstruction Project of the Century.
The old arm of the Emscher, the large park pond and the Waldsee were cleared of mud and fixtures, and the banks were redesigned and planted. Existing paths and squares were renovated.
Attractive places to stay on the waterfront were created: the lakeside square, the lakeside terraces, the lakeside deck on the peninsula, the footbridge and a tree-covered lakeside meadow, the playground at the entrance and finally the canal square, a stage for outdoor events directly on the canal.
The place where in the 1920s a wooden bridge was built over the Rhine-Hamburg was a new location. Today, the new bridge sculpture Slinky springs to fame, a swinging spiral, designed by the artist Tobias Rehberger and developed by the engineering office SBP in Berlin, stands where a wooden bridge crossed the Rhine-Herne Canal in the 1920s.
On the southern edge of the Kaisergarten, an international women's garden has been created thanks to the initiative of individual Oberhausen citizens.
