The concept for the redesign of the surroundings of the Christuskirche in Essen-Altendorf was developed over a long process with great public participation. Different usage requirements for all age groups with multicultural neighbourhood structures were brought together in an overall concept.
The traffic routing around the church was changed and the street spaces redesigned. The cul-de-sacs were partially reopened to provide more social control in the neighborhood. In accordance with the newly devised distribution of functions, three areas were designed differently. The church forecourt became a meeting place and offers the possibility for "open-air services", the new lawn behind the church contains different play offers up to a water play area and the adjoining open space was paved as a square area for larger festivities (cultural festivals, or similar).
After the reconstruction phase, a new term has been established for this area: "the living at the Christuskirchplatz". The vandalism and police operations went towards zero. In an application to the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development in Berlin, this project was selected as one of 10 reference objects nationwide for "Innovations for family and elderly-friendly urban quarters".
