An expert opinion was commissioned for the urban development in Essen, which saw great need for development measures in the Essen-Altendorf district. As a result, it was decided, among other things, to create a new lake of approx. 22,000 m².
For the construction of the lake, parts of the disused railway embankment of the former "Rheinische Bahn" were removed and the districts of Altendorf and Bocholt were reconnected. On the route of the "Rhenish Railway" a cycle path and footpath was developed by the RVR (Regionalverband Ruhr).
This cycle path crosses the lake via a bridge and divides it into an urban south section with a promenade and (seating) steps and a landscaped north section with organic, flowing forms, sunbathing lawns and plantings.
The "Niederfeldsee" was a prerequisite for subsequent comprehensive housing projects such as Allbau AG, which has dismantled outdated housing stock (approx. 180 residential units) and is creating current housing in a park-like environment with direct contact to the water.
