The site is characterised by its location on the city ring road, which was created in the 19th century when the city's defences were abandoned in favour of parking areas. The newly formed campus axis leads from the existing main building of the university to the campus square and forms the backbone of the extension. It allows the two laboratory blocks to be attached in a modular fashion and offers the possibility of expansion. The gentle modelling on the banks of the restored former mill race creates both a park-like enclosure of the university grounds and a connection to the ring road.
