Open-air facilities on a classicist architectural monument

The former mental hospital Illenau in Achern was built in the 19th century as an architecturally symmetrical complex in the classicist style.
While the outstanding architecture is largely preserved, only rudimentary basic structures are still recognizable in the outdoor facilities. The site is steeped in history and lies in the area of tension between city and landscape. We strive for an interpretation of the original site and its changes - no restoration.

The original site used...
in the area of the structural fixtures (walls, stairs and gates) natural stone and wrought iron,
in the area of the paths, however, water-bound cover ("Chaussierung"), natural stone paving friezes and sandstone edging.
The planting consisted, in accordance with the taste of the time, of park-like and architectural tree plantings, ornamental beds and arcade plantings, as well as kitchen garden plantings; the gardens were enclosed; overall, a high level of care was necessary and also possible due to cheap staff and patients.
Translated into the today's means this...
in the area of the constructive installations likewise natural or concrete work stone and steel,
in the area of the ways asphalt, natural stone paving stone friezes and sandstone edgings after original presentation.
With plantings, there are no specifically modern species anyway: they are the same as anno dazumals, and the park-like and architectural tree plantings exist partly still today and form a valuable substance for the new planting.
Historical solitary elements such as fountains and gutter elements as well as main gate system will be authentically rebuilt / installed.
The furniture holds back classic-modern, clear and simple.

The outdoor facilities are realized in connection with the progress of the building renovation step by step according to an overall concept.
