The Marktkirchenplatz has a distinctive topography that was adapted to the respective needs of the time in different construction phases. These changes are to be largely dismantled to allow for new terrain modelling that is close to the original profile.
The surface of the square will be reorganized and laid out with a uniform texture, which at the same time allows for the differentiated uses of the area.
Seating steps and stairs mediate between the levels and thus form a playable topography.
South of the church, the terrain slopes gently down to the street line at the Marktkirche / B242. Steps mediate to the level of the street.

The mountain town of Clausthal-Zellerfeld lies at the intersection of two important north-south and east-west crossings through the Harz Mountains. The market church square is the focal point of the historic core city; the redesign takes this location and its contents into account. Local center, cultural center, center of science and target of tourist interest.
The square follows the natural topography. It is dominated by the imposing wooden church "Zum Heiligen Geist". The square area is bordered by the Upper Mining Office, the TU main building, the parish office, the town hall and other small individual buildings. The traffic routing is integrated into the square. Everyday as well as special events are given space again. The entirety of the historical ensemble is strengthened by the concept.
The surface of the square was newly structured and laid out in a uniform texture, which at the same time allows for the differentiated uses of the area. North of the church, the event area is integrated into the square surface. It combines open-air stage, street furniture, festival and church forecourt in itself.
The variety of uses strengthens the connecting character of the square. Seating steps invite people to linger, wait and meet directly in front of the university building. In front of the main entrance of the church, a level and barrier-free square situation opens up that serves the congregation, guests and visitors of the church. The event area can be used for large open-air events with a stage and possible seating. Media connections and electrical provisions are provided by underfloor electrants.
South of the church, the atmospheric tree-lined space serves market uses and invites people to linger on the small slab fields with the vat water feature and benches. The market spaces and the nearby retail on Adolph Roemer Street complement each other, as do the various public buildings in the surrounding area.
