The outdoor facilities of the Caritas Centre St. Vinzenz, which supports and cares for 400 people with disabilities of all ages, were redesigned.
An existing central access path divides the entire outdoor space into two areas. The design concept picks up on this division and differentiates these two areas in terms of their form and function:
While an area for sporting activities is created to the west of the path, a sequence of action and rest zones is created to the east of it. The backbone of this area is a curved adventure path made of asphalt. The course of this circular path creates spaces which it connects and at the same time separates. This spatial formation is reinforced by the ups and downs of the path. These spaces are occupied in different ways, and the differences in height and slopes created are used for the various activities: the following are created: - play zones with individual equipment - a sand play area with mud facilities - a green classroom - a fairground.
To increase the usable area, a concrete wall is planned as an enclosure and boundary to the busy Friedrich-Ebert-Strasse. The wall picks up the curved form of the road, both in its ground plan and in its height. Individual viewing slits divide the wall and allow views.
The sports facilities on the other side include a bocce court, a tartan running track, a long jump facility, an all-weather court with basketball hoop, and a soccer field.
Along the running track, seating steps are installed alternating with steps. The resulting two levels, which are barrier-free accessible both above and below, provide a kind of grandstand for wheelchair users.
