Redesign of the entrance area of the Botanical Garden in Neuss to a representative neighborhood square.

In14, the opening of the now listed Botanical Garden as a botanical school garden for the promotion of natural history education has taken place. During the 2nd World War the garden was largely destroyed. From 1948 onwards, a gradual construction and expansion of the present Botanical Garden began, culminating in the opening in 1961. The closure of the adjacent city nursery in 2013 was the reason to think about a restructuring and revitalization of the Botanical Garden. The first measure was to upgrade the entrance area on Bergheimer Straße.

A representative neighbourhood square forms the new entrance situation of the Botanical Garden and connects it urbanistically with the adjacent neighbourhood. Characteristic elements of the square are a grass terrace, which is enclosed by a seating wall and into which parts of the historic tree population are integrated, as well as a pergola planted with woodland vines. In the dark, the pergola is illuminated by ground lights. In addition, ornamental cherries, a tulip magnolia and perennials complement the existing vegetation. The main attraction for young visitors is a water feature that can be operated via a floor button. In this way, the children can actively participate in the events.

The planning and realization took place in consideration of the protection of historical monuments and historical relics are integrated into the new design. For example, the location of the water feature results from the location of a historic sandbox. The same applies to the perennial bed on the lawn terrace.
