In the course of the State Garden Show 2014, the city of Schwäbisch Gmünd initiated a far-reaching urban redevelopment that created a green heart in the middle of the city. In this comprehensive redevelopment process, large areas of the city centre were rearranged in terms of traffic and construction. Historical urban structures were uncovered, new visual axes were created and generous open spaces close to the city centre were created.

The symbol of this new Gmünd is the reclamation of a central open space: the river mouth of the Josefsbach into the Rems, which had been overbuilt for decades. The town owes its name to this estuary. The confluence is now the link between new and existing open spaces in Gmünd: situated between the railway station and the old town, the old town garden, the Remspark, Josefsbach and Rems as well as the transitions to the old town meet here and merge to form a new generous green zone. Each of these open spaces opens up to the water, so that a varied interplay of different spatial relationships and perspectives to the water can be experienced around the estuary. The comprehensive urban development and open space upgrading of the inner city, which was previously undersupplied with green spaces, the attractive open spaces along the water and the diverse range of leisure activities strengthen the city centre in competition with the surrounding communities and prepare the traditional Staufer city for the future in the long term.
