Planning and construction were carried out on the Augsburg-Munich concession section over a length of 52 km as part of a pilot project as an operator model. This makes the A8 the first highway in Germany for which a construction concession was awarded to a private operator.

a -services GmbH commissioned NRT with the green space management (planning, construction management, invoicing) for the roadside greenery and 25 ha of roadside compensation areas. A maintenance and development plan (PEPL) was drawn up for this purpose. Based on the PEPL, a landscape maintenance implementation plan was drawn up for the maintenance facing the highway, which is carried out mechanically by a landscape maintenance company. On the side facing away from the freeway, NRT was commissioned by autobahnplus-Services to develop a comprehensive grazing concept using Scottish Highland cattle and is also monitoring its implementation.

As part of the Augsburg-Munich operator model, the care and maintenance of around 180 ha of roadside green and compensation areas was designed in the form of an extensive grazing model. The newly created areas are grazed by around 130 highland cattle and several hundred sheep. The highland cattle are "in use" all year round.

In this way, a contribution is made to the sustainable, resource-conserving maintenance and preservation of the roadside areas. Compared to conventional maintenance, extensive grazing promotes biodiversity and the biotope network in a special way and is also more resource-efficient and economical than the use of machinery.

The extensive maintenance and year-round presence of grazing animals make the project unique in Germany and the Augsburg-Munich route unmistakable. The high recognition value and the accompanying public relations work promote an understanding of nature and identity in a special way.
