Measured by the number of students of over 75,000, the FernUni Hagen is one of the largest universities in Germany. The constantly growing number of students made it necessary to expand the existing buildings, which the assmann gruppe, Dortmund planned for SU Soest.

The design of the inner courtyards posed a particular challenge for B.S.L.:
In addition to their visual-aesthetic significance and their function as places to spend time during breaks, the inner courtyards are rainwater retention basins in the technical sense! In the event of heavy rain or prolonged rain events, the inner courtyards between the building blocks must each store around 130 m³ of water - without this being disruptive in terms of design or without the risk of water flowing into the buildings.

The barrier-free design of the White Square opposite the refectory and the representative courtyard with water wall behind the foyer were further components of the design task.
