The redevelopment of the 30s houses of the Weimarer Wohnstätte GmbH with around 60 apartments made the redesign of the residential courtyard necessary. The aim was to create a semi-public open space, accessible only to tenants, with a high quality of stay, while at the same time optimising the pathway relationships and the technical ancillary functions (refuse, etc.), in addition to designing an appropriate entrance situation, while respecting the valuable old tree population.
The circular path significantly connects all building entrances and encloses an interior area that offers opportunities to linger and move around and, in spring, ignites a colorful fireworks display with flower bulbs. Seasonal perennials and flowering shrubs accentuate the entrances to the buildings and are deliberately limited to areas that can be experienced by the residents, in order to minimise maintenance costs. A hedge planting, into which the entrance structure is integrated, forms an effective spatial edge opposite the street space.
