IGS 2013 Hamburg - The Australian Garden World of Continents: Garden down under - Changing Plant Life

Far away from the rest of the world, a unique and independent flora and fauna developed here. For thousands of years, the indigenous people, aware of the natural cycles, practiced a form of slash-and-burn agriculture. But with the introduction of European agricultural techniques and crops about 200 years ago, land use changed dramatically.

The garden presents itself as a journey through six distinct Australian landscapes. They are clearly set apart by high walls whose red colouring represents the continent. The path leads through cultivated land, the bushlands, the mountains, the rainforest and the coastal regions until it reaches the desert. There the path widens and oversized emu eggs invite you to linger.

A comprehensive impression of the contrasting diversity of an entire continent remains as much in the memory as the feeling for the challenge of not endangering the special features of the landscape zones by external influences.
