While the pied wagtail can be found wherever there are moist, insect-rich places, damselflies, beavers and kingfishers are typical inhabitants of flowing waters. Food, shelter and reproduction of our four example species are closely linked to water bodies.

Problematic interventions
Many negative interventions in natural watercourse structures are due to land reclamation, flood protection or shipping. Straightening, piping and massive bank protections, for example, negatively alter natural characteristics such as natural dynamics, flow velocity and load, thereby destroying the habitats of many plants and animals.

Valuable structures
An intact momentum in watercourses influences the flow behaviour and the shoreline characteristics through natural processes such as erosion and sedimentation, and thus contributes to structural and species diversity. The resulting valuable structures such as steep walls and gravel and sand banks are particularly important to protect, as many species depend on their presence.

Positive action
If the natural dynamics and the occurrence of valuable structures are disturbed by human intervention, targeted measures such as the introduction of dead wood and sturgeon stones, as well as the dissolution of barrages, can positively influence the independent development of the watercourse. Comprehensive renaturation measures can even restore the natural habitats of many animal and plant species.

"With the message of the wealth of species that life unfolds in healthy waters, their banks and embankments, how irreplaceable they are as lifelines of the landscape and what man can do for nature and thus for himself - with this message one must above all reach the hearts and hands of young people, Wartner made clear. In other words, those people from whom the older generations of today are known to have only borrowed the earth, the landscape architect quoted a famous aphorism.
When he speaks to students, he always shows a drawing of a person's heart, which is healthy and through whose intact carotid vessels the blood circulates and pulsates. It was somehow amazing and significant, he said, how this picture apparently conveyed the message very well, that as in the body of a human being, so in nature, the disturbance of such circuits leads to disease and death.
This, he said, is the core mission and idea behind the quartet, which he calls an "environmental education card game." Addressing problems and mistakes, bringing them to the attention of the card players and offering them possible solutions, Wartner explains."
