The conversion of the former Franz Fühmann School into the "Pablo Neruda" District Central Library, which was funded under the Urban Redevelopment East program, brought a decisive upgrade to the educational location at Frankfurter Allee 14a, providing impetus for the sustainable development of the entire district. In a second step, the open spaces of the location will be redesigned in four construction phases from 2013 to 2017. This includes the area surrounding the library as well as the outdoor and sports facilities of the neighbouring Georg Friedrich Händel High School.

With the completion of the second construction phase, the Pablo Neruda Garden, the architecturally outstanding library building was given an appropriate environment. In the bustling Simon-Dach-Kiez with its many bars and pubs, this small park area represents a hidden island of tranquility. Its defining elements are a large lawn with sun loungers, a Himalayan birch grove and a long garden bench with tables. A plaza-like widening in the circular path is available for readings and library events.
