Georg-Friedrich-Händel-Gymnasium, Berlin-Friedrichshain Expansion of open school spaces and creation of new sports and play areas

The Pablo Neruda Library, which opened in 2010, and the Georg-Friedrich-Händel-Gymnasium, a particularly important cultural and educational location for the Friedrichshain district, are developing near Frankfurter Tor. The school's open spaces have been redesigned in conjunction with the entire area surrounding the district's central library since 2013. The urban context of the library, school, a daycare center and a new auditorium is to be strengthened by an overarching design of the open spaces.



In May 2014, the newly designed schoolyard and sports facilities were handed over to the secondary school. In addition to benches and platforms, the pupils can now use a 100m running track and a long jump facility on a synthetic surface as well as a varied climbing course, a motor skills track and a table tennis table. With reference to the materiality and color scheme of the surroundings, materials in yellowish and grey tones were predominantly used, which blend in harmoniously with the existing building.
