The structural planning for the new building of the Erich-Kästner-School in Oelde was already completed when the outdoor facilities could be planned. Nevertheless, in the opinion of the jury for the Spielraumpreis 2015, it was particularly successful in combining the interior and exterior into a unified whole. The outdoor facilities of the Erich-Kästner-School received one of four special prizes at this year's German Play Space Award "Barrier-free Play and Movement Spaces".

The school is the central learning and development space for about 180 children and adolescents with a physical disability or multiple disabilities for the entire school period (11 years) in all-day classes. Many of the support goals for the children and adolescents, such as language and communication, motor skills, perception, cognition, social skills and emotionality, self-realization and life design can be supported with the design of the environment.
So the outdoor space was zoned and designed according to the requirements of the different age groups and use offers, Here, a good synergy effect of inside and outside and a good overall design of the ensemble was taken into account.
The offers should include, on the one hand, as many "normal play offers" as possible (such as the grass playing field) and, on the other hand, take into account disabled-friendly play offers.
