The conversation (since 2009) of the former barracks "Leighton Barracks" into a new urban and landscape space on the Hubland offers the grpße opportunity to set new standards for sustainable urban development with pilot character in the greater Würzburg area. The following basic issues are at stake:

- Climate and environmentally compatible development and housing construction
- Securing water supply and disposal in the new district
- Improving the microclimate and the quality of stay

A key function in urban water management is the ecological handling of rainwater. The integration of these functions is a challenge for the design of the private and public space, as well as the operation and maintenance by the subsequent users, residents and municipal operators. The runoff patterns and the microclimate on the Hubland have a significant influence on the surrounding and lower-lying Würzburg urban area with its small tributaries and the large main watercourse, the Main.
