The outdoor facilities are part of the largely preserved overall complex of the Cistercian monastery of Neuzelle, which was founded in the 13th century.

Courtyards, other monastery buildings, farm buildings, gardens and cemeteries are grouped around the cloister and the monastery church as the functional center of the complex.

In terms of planning, the concept of simple, open spaces for the squares, courtyards and green areas was pursued. The surrounding buildings and walls determine the spatial structure.

The Stiftsplatz is the central square of the Neuzelle monastery, which presents itself in the style of the baroque remodeling of the 18th century. The newly built fountain in the south-western part of the square consists of a regular octagonal bowl with a tall column and sphere in the middle. The cloister building on the small Stiftsplatz is bordered by a narrow flowerbed. The representative character of the square is reflected in the regular planting of shaped shrubs, roses and perennials as well as a vine trellis.

Historic fieldstone paving was laid over large areas; in some cases, the paving was left unchanged for reasons of monument preservation. Individual areas were created using small stone paving that is easy to walk on. The material consists of broken large stone paving and blends in particularly well with the existing paving in its mixed colors.
