The citadel with its surrounding ramparts and wide moats is a nationally important Renaissance fortress and one of Spandau's most important landmarks. In addition, its surroundings are designated as a public green space and a landscape conservation area and are an important area for the protection of species and biotopes.

An open space and development concept was drawn up in advance under the direction of the nature conservation authority to ensure a uniform design and continuous maintenance and development. The measures listed therein will be implemented structurally with this plan. The aim is to enhance the quality of the green space as a place to experience and spend time, to make it easier to experience the historical values and to improve accessibility for people with limited mobility. Areas whose ecological value has been impaired by their use as sports facilities will be renaturalized.

The fortress and the historic ramparts will be made more visible again by maintaining the wooded areas along the banks and on the ramparts and partially uncovered. The lawns will be developed into meadows and border areas. Banks reinforced with loose stone fill will be enriched with riparian shrubs and woody plants. Activity areas and viewing platforms will be created for recreational visitors.
