Open space design on the Westend campus of Johann Wolfgang Goethe University

Redesign of an approx. 12.5 ha campus area in a location close to the city center of Frankfurt. The starting point for the design is the idea of a spacious campus area with a clearly recognizable identity. The campus stretches between the listed IG Farben building to the south, Miquelallee to the north and Grüneburgpark to the west. The urban structure of the IG Farben building and the casino in front of it ("Poelzig ensemble") is taken up and continued to the north. Two park strips divide the campus in a north-south direction. The university facilities (lecture hall building, chairs and libraries) are located adjacent to this. The car-free campus is criss-crossed by asphalted access roads and paths. At the heart of the complex is the campus square with a large water basin. It is the central meeting point and recreation area. The internal park strips are linked to the adjacent urban spaces via green connections - to the west via a terraced garden with the adjacent Grüneburgpark, to the east via a green corridor and a square. On the south-east side, a new main entrance with a square in front will be created on Bremer Strasse. The design of the new open spaces is based on the principles developed by Hermann Mattern for the Poelzig ensemble: the creation of an open, park-like character with extensive meadow areas and selective tree and shrub planting. A uniform furnishing, lighting and orientation system was developed for the entire area.
