The Joan Miró Elementary School combines under its roof a regular school and a state-run European school in the form of a bound all-day school. For the approximately 800 pupils, three break yards and a public playground opposite in the immediate vicinity are available as recreation and play areas.
The redesign was intended to remedy the design and functional deficits of both areas.
In the course of a comprehensive participation process, the children's desire crystallized to draw inspiration for the design of the open spaces from the dream and fantasy worlds of the school's namesake, the Spanish painter, graphic artist and sculptor Joan Miró. His striking visual language of lines, colors, signs and symbols particularly stimulated the children's creativity.
By commissioning the project in parallel, the planning and playground equipment development could go hand in hand from the very beginning. Together, we took up the children's wishes, sketches and models and used them to develop playground equipment and furnishings based on Miró's world of form and imagery.
A blue ribbon, symbolizing a river, connects the different areas with each other. The play areas are distributed as islands along the blue ribbon.
