A concept was developed for the redesign of Marienplatz and the adjacent street spaces that takes into account the special location between the ramparts and the historic sequence of squares in the city centre. With the reorganization of the traffic areas, a generous urban space was created, which is divided into three zones in terms of function and design.
The northern zone at the historic "Frauenturm" clarifies the transition to the old town. The middle zone is designed to be used flexibly as an activity area and remains free of large fixtures. The tree canopy in the south closes the square space and is a place of tranquillity and observation.
The water features of the new "Stadtgraben" - a modern adaptation of the historic ramparts - are an invigorating and identity-creating element.
Jury verdict: The Marienplatz in Görlitz is characterised by its hinge function between the green ramparts and the historical sequence of squares. This function is the basis of the design and shapes the spatial and material components. The sensitive use of simple materials throughout as well as the implants - water band, women's tower, etc. - form a well-functioning overall concept.
