The Katharinenschule is located in the middle of HafenCity. Constrained spatial conditions and an innovative building concept led to a schoolyard on several levels, with schoolyard areas on the ground floor and on the roof (5th floor). Additional play areas were created in the attached daycare center as well as in the residential construction areas on the ground floor and 1st floor.
A seamless fall protection surface made of EPDM granulate was chosen as surfacing, a wooden deck covered with sails as well as concrete and natural stone surfacing as used in the adjacent neighbourhood. Tea chests on the ground floor and coffee sacks on the roof serve as seating furniture reminiscent of the harbour environment.
