A large curative education center for physically and mentally disabled children and young people (from nursery to vocational school) was built on the site of the former Flötzinger Wiese in Rosenheim.
There were several interesting challenges when planning the open spaces:
All open spaces must of course be barrier-free and designed to suit the special users. The entire site is also located in the Mangfall river's flood zone. A flood ditch had to be created around the building in order to control any flooding, which also had to meet high design standards. After all, the HPZ site is an integrative element on the overall site of the Erlenau school center. In many places, such as the Ledererbach stream, the elementary school or the Gabor sports hall, the outdoor facilities had to be adapted to the existing buildings.
The entire site integrates several functions: A spacious driveway and entrance situation with a work of art, a schoolyard with play facilities, classroom terraces, inner courtyards, gardens with flower beds and fountains as well as all the necessary sports facilities (grass playing field, running track, all-weather pitch).
The schoolyard and the sports facilities form a "green ribbon" in 7 different shades of color, creating an effective unit in the center of the new building. The different mounds of EPDM surfacing are particularly popular with wheelchair users.
The flood ditch with elaborate gabion shoring is no longer just pure technology, but a visually and ecologically diverse experience space. It first runs around the building in a strictly architectural manner and then flows into the near-natural bed of the Ledererbach stream.
The six small inner courtyards offer places of retreat. Learning and playing outdoors is also possible in summer under extensive shading systems.
