The war-destroyed area behind Mehringplatz had been kept free for the formerly planned city highway Südtangente. With the IBA '87 and through citizens' initiatives, which had already demanded a green space, a competition was launched to design a park.

Visibility of tracks (1993 )
The newly created park formulates areas with different qualities instead of a fixed use and marks the history with the formation of an ensemble of existing and new fragments.
