The open space planning of the Schlossplatz with the location of the historic castle, the new ECE shopping center and the Landessparkasse zu Oldenburg is derived from the historical models of an open square area at the time of classicism at the end of the 18th century / beginning of the 19th century.

The castle retains its existing green frame through a wide lawn. The end of the lawn and frame for the castle is a 45 cm high seat edge made of light concrete. The bench is a meeting and attraction point and, unlike the 'consumable' area of the catering facilities, can be used by anyone. The bench receives an undercut with a light strip, which provides for a special emphasis, particularly in the night hours.

The existing tree population at the street at the castle place is thinned out, in order to make the house row recognizable at the street of the castle place and in order to give the place an urban edge. Individual existing large trees on the square, especially in front of the south façade of the ECE shopping centre, will be retained and integrated into the new square design in circular tree discs with water-bound cover or ivy underplanting.

The Schlossplatz will be paved with existing large stone paving. The head surfaces of the stones are cut to provide good walkability of the square. This paving covers the whole square and is also continued on the opposite side of the cutting asphalt road, so that the Castle Square is visually held together. In the adjacent area of the sidewalks and between the "Amtshäuser", the surfaces will be made of typical local small stone paving in wild bond. The "Alte Wache" (Old Guardhouse) will be accentuated by light grey granite slabs in the format 1.00 x 1.00 m. Similarly, the new cafés and restaurants in the ECE shopping centre will be provided with approx. 5.00 m wide slabs of grey granite. The existing pathway on the market in the direction of the Lambertikirche will be continued on the Schlossplatz with a slab surface of red granite. The parking spaces on the street at Schlossplatz will be restructured and paved with large stone pavers in terraced bond.

The surface design of the square will have an even and calm gradient in the direction of the seating steps. The rainwater is led and drained down the gradient into a trough channel made of natural stone and street drains. In the area of the castle street the drainage takes place as given over gutters and street drains.

The castle place receives a pleasant illumination by new mast lights with indirect illumination with a light point height of 10 m. In addition the historical facades (castle) should be illuminated. In addition, the historic facades (castle and "Alte Wache") should be illuminated to provide a special emphasis. Further furnishing elements, such as bicycle racks, litter bins and the supply facilities (electricity and water connections) for the market supply can be found along the so-called "furnishing axis", along which the new mast luminaires are also lined up.
