Context:

In December 1994, the city of Halle acquired 134 ha of a former garrison of the CIS armed forces. Shortly afterwards, a development area of approx. 214 ha was formally designated for the development of the new district of Halle Heide-Süd.

Key idea:

A network of linear green structures, which accommodate cycle paths and footpaths and act as ecological corridors, connects the "Green Triangle" with the higher-level green system. Linear perimeter paths surrounding the park support the basic triangular shape.

By overdrawing the original topography and using the excavated material from the development, a variety of spatial situations with strong dynamics were created. Views in and, above all, views out as far as the towers of the market square, buildings that disappear behind terrain modeling and, last but not least, paths make this above and below tangible and the new landscape legible.

Another approach was to exploit the tension between expanse and functional and design concentration points. Today, extensive meadows, light groves of trees and extensive plantings of grasses dominate the picture and set the scene for deliberately concentrated squares, terraces and functional islands, which can assert themselves in the vastness of the space thanks to their strong, robust materiality.
