Szczecin train station (1842-1961 )

The Szczecin railway station went into operation in 1842. Remains of the facilities can be discovered in many places.

The main legacy of the SSN is the elevation of the site - three meters above street level. In addition, rusty tracks, former switches, large-scale paving, remains of building foundations, tunnel remains, remains of masts, markings and, and, and ... were found under the vegetation cover throughout the site.

Berlin Wall (1961-1989 )

The former border installations once occupied the entire area. For this purpose, all buildings of the station were leveled. After the fall of the Wall, the walls and the Kolonnenweg remained.

In the park at Nordbahnhof is the longest preserved piece of the Hinterland wall in Berlin. Today it separates the park from the sports facilities. The attentive observer will notice the remains of the front wall, which has been renovated several times over the decades and almost completely demolished after reunification. Most clearly, a path in the woods marks the course of the wall. The relics of the Wall strip are listed as historical monuments. Because of its unique testimonies, the park was included in the "Berlin Wall" memorial concept.

Urban wasteland (1990-2004 )

From the fall of the Wall until 2002, the area lay fallow. After some initial hesitation, ruderal vegetation developed on soils of the Wall strip that had formerly been treated with poisonous spray.

The wooded strip already along the garden street wall spread rapidly to the west. Waving meadows, lushly flowering tall shrubberies and rare dry grasslands covered the area. Heaps of large sandstone, limestone and granite blocks lay forgotten - habitat for rare bird species and all kinds of small animals.

The layers of the park (Überlagerung )

The area of the park looks back on a long history, which shaped the urban and social development of the surrounding area. Three historical layers are decisive, whose testimonies can still be discovered on the park grounds today.

They interweave to form a unique network and shape the extraordinary atmosphere of the park.
The new urban-natural park at Nordbahnhof adds a new layer that helps to bridge the isolation of the city districts. In this way, the park strengthens a positive social and structural development in the surrounding area.
