Appreciation in the special prize home gardenGerman Landscape Architecture Award 2009

Jury verdict: The property in an upper-middle-class Hamburg suburb on the Elbe is characterised by the old clinker villa and the stock of tall beech trees. The moderate redesign of the garden stands out pleasantly from the romantic-traditional gardens in the neighbourhood, without destroying the genius loci with radical interventions. The enclosure of the area with a high and very wide hedge sculpture, the clear geometric lines and the decision to use clinker brick as the material for paths and steps bring a soothing calm to the grounds, as does the row of square herb beds. Waves and spheres of boxwood break the austerity of the low-set courtyard.
