Situated at a strategically important location in the east-west green corridor, on the Emscher Island and on the north-south corridor Bottrop- Essen, the site of the former Bernemündung sewage treatment plant in Bottrop has become the focus of attention, and not just since its closure.
The planning and the built BernePark are the result of an intensive participation process in the area of Soziale Stadt Bottrop-Ebel.
The heart of the park is the two 70-metre sewage basins. The earth basin is a terraced sunken garden designed as a "theatre of plants" in close cooperation with the artist team Piet Oudolf, GROSS.MAX.* as part of emscherKUNST2010. The second basin remains as a water basin.
Between the two basins and the plant building, the central square opens up, where the former engine house also stands. Its hedge-framed café terrace is a highly frequented destination on sunny days.
