The green space at the observatory east of the city centre of Bergedorf in the east of Hamburg is not a classic park. It is an evolved space between the settlements above and below the striking Geesthang. With its forest stands, the Geesthang was a source of raw materials for logging and building materials close to the city before the 20th century; only later was it discovered for recreational use.
With the relocation of the Hamburg Observatory to the Gojenberg (1906) and favoured by a railway stop, this impressive terrain formation quickly became a popular destination for excursions. After 1945, the area was further developed as an excursion destination within the framework of "welfare and emergency works". In the eastern slope sections, however, the facilities from both periods are only relict.
Below the observatory, which has applied to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the visitor is offered a lot: winding paths through primeval hillside forests and magnificent views of the Elbe Valley lowlands. Outside Bergedorf, the site is little known today.
With the care and development plan, the first "synopsis" of the heterogeneous site is now available. The partly diverging functional requirements are taken into account in a total of 16 sub-spatial considerations: e.g. in the form of the inventory of structural facilities, in the form of maintenance-technical notes for the steep locations of the slope forest or in the form of the restoration or new conception of views into the Elbe valley.
