The Garden City Falkenberg was built in 1913-14, has been a listed building since 1963 and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.
Unique for the time of its creation, not only an architect, Bruno Taut, but also a garden architect was consulted for the planning of the green spaces and kitchen gardens. Ludwig Lesser pursued the goal of creating "an overall complex that appears harmoniously structured and is economically (...) well thought out".
After reunification, the buildings were renovated by the Berliner Bau- und Wohnungsgenossenschaft von 1892 eG. and the historic colour scheme was restored. In 2001, with the support of the State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments, the Katrin Lesser office was able to prepare an expert report on the outdoor facilities. In it, measures were explained that would bring out the rural character of the settlement again. By adhering to some basic rules, such as avoiding conifers and planting fruit trees, the unity between the buildings and the outdoor space is to be re-created.
In spring 2002, the front gardens and green spaces in the Akazienhof and the terraced gardens in the Gartenstadtweg were restored in a manner appropriate to the monument.
