Can centenary city parks once again provide impetus for urban development? This was precisely the goal of the state horticultural show conceived for Burg in Saxony-Anhalt. The city has two listed city parks: Goethepark in the west and Flickschupark in the east of the old town. These parks have been revitalised and new uses created. In between, new open spaces were created along the river Ihle in the old town (Weinberg, Ihlegärten). Together, these four parks create new connections, increase the diversity of uses in the urban space and open up new and unusual perspectives on the city of Burg.

GOETHE PARK AND PLAYGROUND - REVITALIZATION AND ENVIRONMENT
In the areas of the Goethe Park characterized by historical substance, perennial beds and shrub plantings were created in relation to the former horticultural equipment. The design reference point of this park area is a former monument site. This site was occupied by a sculpturally designed pavilion and thus redefined for the site.
The station forecourt and its surroundings were redesigned as a reference point for the park on the west side. A flat water stone forms the centre of the square as an atmospherically effective element.
The adjacent former building yard area was transformed into a play forest. Flowing path structures lead through the impressive woodland to various activity areas. In the former area of the western cemetery, quieter areas were created where grave relics are integrated into an extensive wild herbaceous planting.

THE VINEYARD - INSCENTERING A TOPOGRAPHY
The vineyard area is staged as a topographical feature. A city balcony has been created above the newly planted vineyard, offering a sweeping view of the city skyline. Fruit trees, cultivated shrubs and a perennial planting with useful plants on the summit take up the horticultural tradition of the area under the guiding principle of the "edible city" and urban gardening.
At the foot of the ridge, a riverside park takes up relics of the former industrial use and thus also conveys the history of this place. Motivically, this character is strengthened by gravel areas planted with dry vegetation and a playground with tower elements.

DIE IHLEGÄRTEN - PARZELLENGÄRTEN AM FLUSSEN
These Ihlegärten pick up in their chamber structure the plot boundaries of the former development of this inner-city area. As a reaction to the signs of shrinkage in the city centre, this open space structure maintains the spatial density and heterogeneity of the demolished city quarter and thus makes it recognizable as a quality that characterizes this place. The Ihlegärten are enclosed with hedges, creating individual garden spaces that can accommodate different, changing uses.
The existing island situation can be experienced through the changing routing of the path between the banks. Seating steps will create direct access to the water. A new bridge takes up the angularity of the situation in its basic form. The aim of this design was neither to "eradicate" the urban structure nor to renaturalize this inner-city location. The structure of the Ihle gardens therefore refers to horticultural-urban forms.

FLICKSCHUPARK - VERDICHTUNG DER IHLELANDSCHAFT
The listed Flickschupark formulates the transition to the river landscape of the Ihle. The historic avenue running along the north bank of the Flickschu pond was freed and extended to form a generous promenade. The pond bank was opened up on the west and north side by a stone footbridge and flat natural stone steps. As a contrast to this architectural design, the southern and eastern shoreline edges were formulated as landscaped banks with water's edge plantings and a reed zone.
In the 1950s, Flickschupark was expanded to the east to include open meadow spaces with a variety of play features. With reference to this, an approximately 6-metre-high viewing and play hill was created in this area.

Jury verdict: Internet shopping, car-friendly business parks and faceless chain stores - all of these have been making life difficult for the inner cities of small and medium-sized towns in particular for years. The small town of Burg in Saxony-Anhalt set a clear example for the revitalization of the inner areas with the State Garden Show 2018. To this end, the two historic parks Goethepark and Flickschupark were upgraded and, in addition, two new parks were realized in the old town on the little river Ihle: the vineyard and the Ihle gardens. Connections were created and long-neglected areas were brought back into the public perception.

The jury emphasizes the carefully nuanced design of the individual facilities, which elaborates or reformulates the different uses and meanings of the individual areas. In particular, the jury appreciates how the historic facilities are further developed into a lively inner city through the careful interplay of different play themes. In this way, a system of public open spaces has been created that gives the old town a new identity and, above all, a new relevance for urban life and thus also provides new impulses for further urban development.
